Does Junk food lead to obesity Epidemic?
Presently, the prevalence of both fast-food consumption and obesity has been increased. The study intended to survey the prevalence of fast food consumption and to determine its association with abdominal and general obesity. Fast-food consumption was correlated with abdominal obesity but did not relate to obesity based on BMI.
Fast-food consumption has an increasing trend due to convenience, costs, menu choices, flavor, and taste. Although there are many contributing factors to obesity, such as over-eating, poor food choices, genetic disposition, and lack of exercise, the problem goes far beyond individual behavior. The food industry can make a significant contribution to reducing obesity by cutting back on sugary or fattening products, offering healthier choices, becoming more transparent with nutritional information. In addition, obesity prevalence increased dramatically worldwide as one of the most serious public health problems especially in childhood and adolescents in the current century.
Fast foods fall into this category of food. Fast foods are typically:-
- high in calories
- high in fat
- high in saturated and trans fat
- high in sugar
- high in simple carbohydrates
- high in sodium (salt)
Throughout the time these sugary and salt-laden foods may not be good for your health, the scientists found no compelling difference in how much of these foods either overweight or normal-weight people consumed. These are foods that are clearly bad for us and if we eat too much of them they will make us fat, but it doesn't appear to be the contrive that is making people overweight and obese. Highly processed foods tend to trigger cravings for more of the same because of their chemical create and the body's physiological response. Despite this, this study showed the different effects of fast foods on abdominal and general obesity as a hypothesis.
